To avoid NATs, address uniqueness is necessary, but not sufficient
- to avoid NATs addresses have to be both globally unique and globally routeable
- connectivity in the presence of unique, but non-routeable addresses requires NATs
With NATs globally unique addresses no longer necessary
- eliminates the need to increase the size of address space beyond what is provided by IPv4
