Introduction
Many Internet Peering Points (IPPs) are usually based upon switched ethernet technology
Other uses of ethernet switching:
- co-lo in-house LAN-based interconnection services
- carrier LAN extension services
- presentation of WAN-based interconnection services
- competing peering points in same metro area
- specialised service interconnect (e.g. IPv6, multicast)
When (if ever) it is a good idea to interconnect these, and when is it not ?
