Its essential that the impact on IP naming and addressing requirements which stem from all the key drivers referred to above are identified at an early stage and fed into the appropriate bodies to enable them to make key strategic decisions from the widest perspective. Discussions have already taken place over the address requirements for GPRS infrastructure and attempts are now being made within the UMTS Forum to consider the initial requirements for 3rd Generation mobiles. However these are just parts of a very big picture that need to be addressed sooner rather than later if the future is going to be shaped in the required manner. Having identified the future trends and key drivers the main areas that need to be included in any assessment are mobile (including handsets), requirements that stem from the ADSL/cable modem market, voice, multimedia and e-Commerce applications.
It is proposed that identification of the impact and issues for the world of IP addressing should be the next step for the ICANN ad hoc group.
